The
Rose
Director:
Mark Rydell
U.S.A. 1979 (134 min.) - Studio Fox
 Cast: Bette Midler, Alan Bates,
Frederic Forrest, Harry Dean Stanton, Sylvester,
Sandra McCabe, Barry Primus, David Keith.
Bette Midler's film debut as a hard-drinking and
rockstar -- inspired by the life of Janis Joplin --
struggling against the pressures of success. Alan Bates is her
mean-spirited manager and Forrest is her on-again, off-again
lover. The film's
musical numbers contain a raw energy and
Sylvester is in the film when "The Rose"
joins a club to attend a show of imitators, during the show appears
Sylvester impersonating Diana Ross. It's a short scene but for
every Syl's fans this film it's a "must have"! |

Longtime
Companion
Director: Norman
René
U.S.A. 1990 (96 min.) - MGM

Cast: Campbell Scott, Bruce
Davison, Dermot Mulroney, Stephen Caffrey, Patrick Cassidy,
Brian Cousins, Mary-Louise Parker,
Michael Schoeffling.
The "Hit" Do Ya Wanna
Funk is
featured in the soundtrack of this beautiful film. The excertp of the song
can be heard in the scene while the protagonists
are in a Disco-Bar outdoors. A tremendously important and stirring film about
the AIDS crises. Longtime Companion is an exceptional look into the lives of
a group of gay friends and how the disease affects them. This remarkable
film begins in 1981 and ends in 1989 charting the change in the characters,
from carefree innocents enjoying their sexual freedoms to men numbed by suffering,
forced to cope with the death of friends and lovers. A special mention to Bruce
Davison his superlative
portrayal of the lover who slowly watches his longtime companion succumb.
